In 1995, a veteran film producer Bill Rebane and his wife Barbara, visited the Buckeridge Gallery near Saxon, Wisconsin, and were overwhelmed by the uniqueness and size of the Buckeridge collection. Their visit and interest in these neglected forms of Art, prompted them to create this production “Rhapsody in Stone”, as a labor of love and a tribute to the efforts of Byron and Dorothy Buckeridge. This then also prompted the creation of the term “Pet Rocks With A Soul”.

Description

1998 – 22 minutes- Lake Superior “Concretions” are found primarily, if not exclusively, along the south western shores of Lake Superior.
While Concretions can be found in a few other parts of the world, the Lake Superior variety are indeed some of the most uniquely shaped and distinctive forms create by nature herself. According to a Wisconsin Geological Survey, Concretions originated some 20,000 years ago in Glacial Lake Duluth (now called Lake Superior.) They are made of sand, silt, clay and are hardened by lime or iron oxide. Their theory is that Concretions began to form around fossil nucleas and the
a) number of nucleations
b) the bedding of the surrounding deposits, and
c) the direction and rate of movement of mineralized ground water
caused the funny, bizarre and beautiful shapes. However, there are many other theories of how they were formed, including one of a Chippewa Indian Chief Strange Arrow, that the Concretions were created by a Chippewa God who gave each one a “little soul.” Whatever they may be or however they came to be, they are a source of never ending delight, and are of more than ordinary significance and therefore a “Form of Art”, created by none other than Nature itself.
